Hamilton Zoo's 3.26ha of landscaped grounds are home to more than 440 native and exotic animals.
The zoo takes part in breeding programmes for category 1 and 2 endangered species, and its caretakers' vision is that it will be internationally recognised as a "conservation zoo".
Visitors can see the animals in generous enclosures and model habitats. One is the aviary - the largest in Australasia. Open from 9am to 3.30pm every day, zoo entry is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children aged 2 to 17. A family pass is $27.
