One of the few original gold mining sites from the 1800s is still giving up its treasures. The Goldfields Mining Centre at the entrance to Kawarau Gorge, is the original site of an 1860s gold strike and it is still possible to find reasonably large gold nuggets.
The centre also offers horse riding, tours and a heritage trail, and can arrange jet boat and helicopter rides. It is open from 9am to 5pm during the winter.
