There are no busloads of tourists arriving in droves at Nikau Cave - at least, not without directions given over the telephone. Proud and protective of the glow-worm cave's peaceful setting on a private farm, those who manage Nikau Cave at Waikaretu give tours by arrangement and detailed directions when intending visitors make a booking. Less than 1 1/2 hours' drive southwest of Auckland, Nikau Cave is abundant in glow-worms, stalactites and stalagmites, giant pillars, tiny "straws", and limestone "shawls".
Tours can be tailored to suit your abilities, whether you prefer an easy walk or some "low crawling", and all involve a 10-minute walk across farmland and through native bush. Helmets and caving lights are provided.
There are also gardens, farm walks, accommodation and meals by arrangement.
Tour times are flexible and tours cost $20 to $25 for adults; children $12.
