The Australasian Gannet Colony at the southern end of Muriwai Beach makes an interesting outing.
About 1200 pairs of gannets can be seen between August and March.
Fur seals feed and rest at Oaia Island, 1.6km off the coast and can sometimes be seen in spring.
The Takapu Refuge Walk leaves from the car park at Maori Bay and leads out to the gannet colony before descending to the beach.
Viewing platforms offer views of the colony and coast, and information panels provide facts about these migratory birds.
Muriwai is 45km from Auckland.
Take SH16 (Northwestern Motorway) towards Helensville.
