Puketutu Island in Auckland's Manukau Harbour is to be turned into a regional park.
The former quarry near Mangere Bridge will be rehabilitated with clean fill and treated biosolids from the adjacent Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.
After successful negotiations between the current owners the Kelliher Charitable Trust, Waikato-Tainui, local iwi, and Watercare Services, there's an agreement to develop the island as a public open space.
The proposal still needs the approval of the Environment Court.
