It’s cold outside, but the last thing we want to do is hibernate all season long. Rug up and stave off cabin fever with our top five short getaways. And don’t think you have to be a snow bunny to make the most of a short winter break. Take a plus one on a snuggly, romantic getaway or get a gang together for some board games and mulled wine. Both options shake our winter blues.
1: Taupo
There are plenty of thermal hot pools around New Zealand, but our favourite is the natural hidden spring in Lake Taupo. Not so secret any more, this treasure under the bridge is our favourite spot to warm up in winter - worth the freeze factor you have to face when you get out. Details are scarce - but a local should be able to point you in the right direction. If you're stuck, there are nearby geothermal hot pools that are also plenty of fun. Feeling brave? Go skydiving - on a clear day you can see both sides of the North Island. The adrenalin will warm you up.
Ohakune is a terrific township to base yourself for winter activities. If you're feeling outdoorsy, a crisp, cool day is ideal for conquering one of New Zealand's great hikes - the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. You can get some amazing vistas and stay warm without sweating up a storm as you would in summer. If you're not in the mood to move, take a happy snap at the big carrot and check out the local bars and restaurants. One of the biggest days of the year worth considering is the Ohakune Mardi Gras - this year it's on Saturday, June 27.
3: Matakana
Matakana is a quaint getaway. We suggest arriving on Saturday before 1pm so you can start with a visit to the friendly Matakana Markets and pick up fresh, local supplies for a delicious afternoon grazing plate later in the day. Before hunkering down, wander through the markets, down to the ducks on the river and enjoy a generous lunch at the Matakana Market Kitchen. There are plenty of baches for rent in the region, so it's worth checking out for a group getaway with family or friends.
4: Waitomo Caves
Creepy, charming and cool, the Waitomo Caves is an awesome escape. Pull on your winter woollies and take a boat ride through the glowworm grotto, dotted with the tiny luminous critters. Check out the brilliant limestone formations in the Ruakuri Cave - the underground walk also has wheelchair access. Nearby, the beautiful old Waitomo Caves Hotel is a special spot to stay if you're after something romantic. After a day of exploring, tuck in to a hearty, warm meal and huddle up by the crackling fire.
5: Whangamata
A hot spot during summer, you're usually able to snag a good deal on a bach during the colder months in Whangamata. It's a nice destination for families where you can enjoy a moody winter walk along the surf beaches (also popular for fishing, if that's your game). There are short walks and bike rides in the Coromandel Forest Park to keep you busy before hunkering down around a fireplace once the sun sets.
