Fire rips through Europa-Park, Germany's biggest theme park

25,000 visitors were evacuated from the Europa-Park amusement park in south west Germany, after a fire broke out on one of the attractions.

"The park has been completely cleared," a police spokesman said, after the fire broke out on Saturday night.

The fire which started in a storage building spread through the park, engulfing the Pirates of Batavia boat ride in the Scandinavian themed area.

In spite of the scale of the blaze and the damage to these attractions, the rest of the park was unaffected. The park was able to open on Sunday morning.

There were no injuries to the public reported, but seven firemen were admitted to hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation from the blaze. They were all subsequently discharged.

The park is themed after the different regions in Europe and is located near Freiburg and the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The Dutch and Scandinavian themed areas were affected by the blaze and have been closed to the public, while the rest of the park remains open.

"Please accept our sincere apologies if some park operations don't run as smoothly as usually," the park said in a statement following the fire.

Europa-Park is the largest theme park in Germany and second in largest in Europe, after Disneyland Paris.
