Flying Kiwi Wilderness Expeditions are not about sightseeing from comfortable seats or partying every night. Based in Nelson, the Flying Kiwi circuit of New Zealand takes 27 days, usually with a load of bicycles in a trailer that doubles as a kitchen.
It's camping all the way in commercial camping grounds and Department of Conservation bush camps. (The bus has hot-water tanks for those who cannot cope without daily showers.)
Take four days to explore places such as the Bay of Islands - or do the entire circuit. There's no age limit (last year's passengers ranged from 15 to 78), but being keen to get active is recommended for exploring on bicycles, hiking and bush walks.
Tours operate from September to early May.
