Eco-tourism on wheels

Listening to New Zealand native bellbirds and tui, staring out to sea and at mountain vistas - and risking a crick in your neck to admire a 2000-year-old, 40m -high Matai tree, hidden in 404ha of near-virgin native forest, is all just a 10-minute drive away from the city of Nelson.

Happy Valley Four Wheelin Fun Adventures - a New Zealand Tourism Award winner and three-time finalist over the past three years - was started nearly eight years ago.

With a stable of 30 super-quiet four-wheel motorbikes available, small and large groups can explore this sheep farm on guided tours that range from 90 minutes to 3 1/2 hours.

A long list of wildlife, farm animals and pets and stunning natural treasures are sure to make this eco-tour one of the most memorable holiday activities for New Zealanders and overseas tourists alike.

For those who find riding, even on a sturdy four-wheel motorbike, a bit daunting, the tour can be taken in a fun buggy, which carries up to six people.

Prices for riding the bikes range from $55 to $120, depending on which tour you take. Passengers ride for between $20 and $30, and children are charged $1 for each year of their age.
