Two major South Island ski fields had a dream start to their seasons with hundreds of enthusiasts flocking to the snow at the weekend.
Mount Hutt drew more than 600 each day while Coronet Peak counted in more than 2000 on Saturday and Sunday.
With fine weather and snowmaking continuing overnight to back up the recent heavy snow falls they had a big weekend as the first commercial ski areas to open in Australasia.
Mt Hutt ski area manager David Wilson said it had been a great opening weekend.
Mt Hutt opened with limited trails and facilities available, including the main Broadway Trail, the learner's area and novice area. The Exhibition Quad chair, learners lift and first platter lift were operating.
"It's been great to welcome back all our supporters," he said.
"Everyone's been stoked at the conditions and have enoyed the music and the atmosphere. People had a lot of fun."
