September 16-25, Maribor, Slovenia
Picturesque Maribor is Slovenia's second largest city, and sits at the heart of a wine region that boasts a centuries-old viticulture tradition.
In fact Maribor claims to have the world's oldest producing grapevine, which historic paintings and genetic testing show to be more than 400 years old.
The annual Old Vine Festival is a celebration of local food, wine and traditions, with folk music and dancing, market stalls, and activities taking place in city squares as well as in the surrounding wine region.
The highlight is the ceremonial gathering of grapes from the ancient vine, which marks the start of harvest in the wider area.
