24 November-5 December, Kanchanaburi, Thailand
In World War II the railway line between Thailand and Burma was built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers to give the Japanese an overland supply route. It became known as the Death Railway for the terrible loss of life that occurred during construction. The associated war graves and museums are poignant places to visit at any time, and every year the railway's infamous Bridge on the River Kwai is the focal point for extensive commemorations. The schedule includes exhibits, cultural performances, rides on vintage trains, and a spectacular nightly sound and light show based on the history of the line.
