April 16, New Caledonia
Carnaval de Noumea - the Noumea Carnival - is a major festival held in the New Caledonian capital every April. Each year the carnival follows a different theme and since New Caledonia is hosting the 14th annual Pacific Games in August 2011, this year there will be a sporting theme. The carnival promises spectacular floats, glitzy and colourful costumes, music, dance and revelry in the streets. Spectators are encouraged to join the fun as dozens of themed floats parade through the seaside city, then dance the night away at the carnival dance hall in the palm-lined Place des Cocotiers in central Noumea.
