August 20-28, Ireland
Ireland's National Heritage Council protects and enhances the nation's built, natural and cultural heritage, so the activities on offer during National Heritage Week are incredibly diverse. Events and activities are held throughout the country and can range from living in a castle, to surfing lessons, whale watching, poetry readings, music recitals, dancing at the crossroads, tasting famine soup or hunting for bats and bugs. The country's historic walled towns host festivals, battle re-enactments, exhibitions and traditional fairs, while a special kids' programme offers a wealth of education and entertainment. Many events are free and many heritage sites offer free admission or discounts.
