July 1-10, Knysna, Western Cape, South Africa
The seaside town of Knysna is famous for its oysters - both cultivated and wild - and during the annual Oyster Festival thousands of people participate in celebrations dedicated to the delicacy. More than 100 events are scheduled, including major sports events like the forest marathon and the cycle tour, as well as golf, bowls and fishing. Beer, wine and whisky tastings are on offer, while oyster-related events include shucking and eating competitions, cooking demonstrations, a lively street parade and a Mardi Gras. Kids can enjoy theatre, puppet shows and art workshops, as well as a sports fair where they can try different sports.
