For a less-crowded coastal experience, Smuggler's Cove at Whangarei Heads is for you.
Setting off on foot from the carpark at Urquharts Bay, you can choose between an easy 15-minute stroll to the beach or taking the longer loop track around Busby Head, which takes about an hour. On the longer walk, history buffs can search for evidence of Maori occupation, including a defensive pa, terraces and an almost continuous midden that demonstrates how abundant the kai moana was around here.
Once at the beach, there's every chance you'll have it to yourself, although you will share it with the oyster catchers, who will dive bomb you if they feel threatened. If you're planning to spend the day at the cove, take an umbrella as well as food and drink.
When you've had enough of playing Robinson Crusoe, head to the Taurikura General Store for an icecream, or to the ever-so-pretty Parua Bay Tavern for a cold beverage.
