If you're travelling on the Banks Peninsula or from Rotorua to Taupo this Saturday, a bicycle might get you there faster than a car.
Le Race, the South Island's largest cycling event, includes some notorious heart-in-your mouth hills in the 100km between Christchurch and Akaroa.
It sets off from Christchurch's Cathedral Square. On the same day, North Island cyclists will cover another 100km course, from Rotorua to Taupo.
Le Race, in its fourth year, is one of the toughest cycling events, while the Rotorua-to-Taupo "100k Flyer" offers five different grades, including social, masters and tandem riders.
