The Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival will be held May 7-9 in venues around Paihia, Waitangi, Russell and Haruru Falls. It features more than 45 acts from New Zealand, Nashville and Australia. Badges cost $40 and give access to all venues as well as to shuttle buses between venues.

Head of steam
Kawakawa's Puff N Pull Carnival is a fun day centred on the town's vintage railway. It includes a walk along the tracks, teams pulling Gabriel, the restored steam locomotive, as well as a Guinness World Record attempt. It's on May 16, starting at 10am.

Sky's the limit
Masterton's Hood Aerodrome hosts the Anzac Day WW1 Air Show on April 24. It kicks off at 12pm with vintage vehicle rides, then from 1.30pm-4pm the skies come alive with dogfights and barnstorming competitions. Entry costs $20 (adults), $10 (youth/child) $50 (family).
