Alpine Springs at Lake Tekapo cranks up the ice-skating fun every Friday night with a family disco followed by ice hockey games. There's a late night disco on Saturdays, and from July 16-18, ice hockey clashes with teams featuring NZ's top players.

Capital garden
The on-going walk series at Wellington's public gardens gives a great insight into history, flora and fauna. On August 13 there's a Glowworm Walk at the Botanic Garden - bring a torch to Founders' Entrance at 7.30pm. It costs $5 a person, children under 12 free. At Otari-Wilton's Bush, discover the relationship between plants and the environment on July 25, and on August 22 learn about botanists who collected plants for the garden. $3.

Christchurch's cathedral is the atmospheric venue for Water, the third concert in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra's Cathedral series, on August 22. The final concert, Air, is on September 26. On July 31, the orchestra presents a tribute to Rodgers & Hammerstein. Book at Ticketek.

Step out in Taupo
On August 1 runners and walkers can join the Mizuno Half Marathon, a non-competitive event along the scenic shores of Lake Taupo. The course covers 21.1km, suitable for all ages and abilities. On September 4 there's the Mizuno Off-Road Half and Quarter Marathons.
