Managers of the Ohakuri Camp, about 30 minutes' drive north of Taupo, reckon only a few Aucklanders would have heard of "their hidden camping gem".
The 10ha camp is on the shore of Lake Ohakuri, and offers unrestricted camping. Holidaymakers are free to "spread out" and claim a peaceful patch of the wilderness.
Facilities include freshwater taps and numerous toilet blocks. There is no power and the nearest shop is 15 minutes' drive away. Camp fees are $5 a night for adults, $2 for children.
Contact: arrange for gates to be opened by calling ISCL Security (07) 886 5587, mobile (025) 770 840. For large groups or special events, contact the camp's management company Visitor Solutions ph (09) 533 4155, email camp.info@xtra.co.nz
