Two islands in Lyttelton Harbour near Christchurch can claim a fascinating, diverse and almost bizarre history. Quail Island and Ripapa Island are the focus of two explorer journeys by Blackcat Tours, each lasting two hours.
Quail Island was once home to a leper colony, a quarantine station used by early European settlers, and later, a training place for sled dogs. Fort Jervois was built on Ripapa Island in 1860 to repel the Great Russian scare and later became a prisoner of war camp.
Tourists are advised to take snacks, warm clothes and for Ripapa Island, a torch to explore the islands numerous tunnels.
