The tranquil Katikati Bird Gardens are a great place to enjoy a picnic and a leisurely stroll around the grounds, which feature mature trees, lily ponds, flower gardens and secluded lawn areas.
The gardens are home to more than 50 varieties of birds, including colourful exotics, native kea and talking cockatoos.
Visitors can hand-feed friendly peacocks, ducklings and doves that roam the grounds.
A cafe serves light refreshments and there's a gallery with work by local artists.
It's on SH2, 7km south of Katikati.
