Beer celebration in Wellington

The inaugural BrewNZ in Wellington this May features the New Zealand Beer Cup - a competition for "the best drop in the country".

The five-day event opens on May 21 and includes seminars, brewing equipment displays, and samples of local fare.

BrewNZ director Kerry Tyack said the celebration was not going to be a "beer fest" with the obligatory marquee or booze-up theme. It was a chance for hospitality businesses in Wellington to show how beer and food "can surprise and delight in their variety," he said.

Beer makers who registered their beer for the New Zealand Beer Cup by this Friday would receive a discount.
