If discovering the real Bali appeals, but you don't want to get lost, ripped off or miss the best sights, hitch a ride on a motor scooter.
A Bay of Islands couple, Mike Britton and Angela Bruce, have been travelling to Bali regularly since 1989, and take up to 12 people at a time on their Bali by the Back Roads tour. You can travel one or two-up on scooters or sit back in an air-conditioned van, with a local guide.
Britton and Bruce reckon their tour is one of the best ways to interact with the Balinese, observe their culture and catch unplanned sights such as festivals and processions.
There are two trips this year. One is more suited to the experienced motorcyclist who can handle trail bikes on jungle and mountain tracks; the other is a slower trip for 110cc scooter riders who like to take lots of photos and spend time watching the locals and enjoying the scenery.
Costs range from $NZ3195 to $3295, twin share, and include airfares, departure tax, transfers, breakfasts, transport and guide fees. The first tour is from July 14 to 24, the second from July 28 to August 8.
