Glass-bottom boating is not just for the tourists in the tropics. The Goat Island Marine Reserve, 90km north of Auckland, just outside Leigh, has Habitat Explorer, the first glass-bottom boat to operate in New Zealand.
The reserve, established in 1975, was New Zealand's first, and is home to abundant fish and marine life. All trips have a full commentary and run all year, weather permitting. Family passes are available.
