Butterflies are near Auckland airport - and not just the ones that flutter in the stomachs of nervous fliers. Perhaps a visit to the calm surroundings of Butterfly Creek might even ease pre-flight nerves.
The first stage of the development is open, and includes a cafe and bar overlooking wetlands and ponds, the miniature Red Admiral Express steam train, and a playground. Stage two opens next month and will include a tropical butterfly house with more than 500 butterflies. A walk-through aviary, an exhibit building for fish, reptiles and birds and a farmyard petting zoo are also planned. Find it at Tom Pearce Drive, Manukau.
