Getting away from it all in the heart of the Abel Tasman National Park means no television and little chance of using your mobile phone.
Remote, but by no means roughing it, Kanuka Hill Lodge generates its own electricity and brings in gas for cooking the locally sourced scallops, crabs and vegetables. The lodge is accessible by water taxi, helicopter or a three-hour bush walk.
The lodge provides a dinghy and fishing gear for guests' use, access to sailing and diving trips and swimming with seals, plus glow-worms to visit in a beach cave. Room rates are $175 double and $115 single, not including meals.
