It's the Argentines you want to watch out for.
A recent survey fingers our Latin friends as the nationality most likely to feel happy stealing from their hotel rooms. And we're talking about more than just the soaps and shampoos here - this is bathrobe and ashtray territory.
Seventy-three per cent of Argentines admitted to a bit of thievery in their hotel room, according to the unscientific survey of 5000 travellers in 28 countries conducted by hotels.com. Singapore (71 per cent) and Spain (70 per cent) round out the top three.
We Kiwis, a middling nation of essentially trustworthy souls, are joint 13th alongside the reliable Dutch and - perhaps surprisingly - our convict-descended Australian cousins.
(I wrote in this column a few weeks back about my habit of happily plundering the toiletries. After saying that I always left the slippers and bathrobes, some readers pointed out that it's probably more hygienic to take the slippers, thus sparing the next guest a dose of your athlete's foot. My feet, of course, are pristine, but it's an interesting point.)
