Artist Jenny Hill has opened her clifftop home above Matapouri Bay for bed & breakfast-style accommodation - perfect for artistic guests who want to get creative over a weekend.
Alongside the Starfish Gallery, where guests can immerse themselves in the work of local artists, Starfish House was built eight years ago by artists Tom Burnett and Jenny Hill, and has featured in home design magazines and on television programmes.
Hill believes the best form of tourism is to bring tourists into a Tutukaka coastline home "to see what it is like to live and work on one of New Zealand's most beautiful coastlines".
Guests can choose from a four-person room with a new, Italian-style ensuite or a loft bedroom with bird's-eye views out to the Poor Knights Islands.
The workshops are fully catered and cost $280 a person for two nights. Mosaic workshops will be held over the next two weekends, followed by weekends covering the art of Tivaivai (Cook Island applique) and jewellery-making. Guests can also dream up their own workshop topics.
Matapouri Bay is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Auckland, just outside Whangarei on the Tutukaka Coast.
