While centenaries are special in New Zealand, on the other side of the world, the Welsh are celebrating 1000 years of history.
More than 100 events will be held, ranging from outdoor plays and falconry to battle re-enactments with archers and medieval siege engines.
The government agency responsible for historic monuments, Cadw, has organised the celebrations, which also include the 700th anniversary of Tintern Abbey, the ruins of which were romanticised by poet William Wordsworth.
For its size, Wales boasts more castles than any other country, and most are open to the public.
