John Key will pay an official visit to Washington next year following a personal invitation to the White House from President Barack Obama.

John Key had "quite a fruitful" discussion with US president Barack Obama during the official Apec leaders' dinner last night, and also breakfasted with him today, writes John Armstrong.

Deal follows unveiling of similar agreements with China, Malaysia and some Gulf states.
