Hundreds of descendants of soldiers who fought at Gallipoli have attended a private viewing of an exhibition at Te Papa in Wellington which commemorates those involved in the war. "Gallipoli: The scale of our war" depicts monuments of seven soldiers and a nurse in moments frozen in time. Each work is 2.4 times human scale.

Residents at Radius Care in Fulton, Dunedin share their personal war time stories and experiences. Facility manager Robyn Bowie says ‘it’s vitally important that we continue to share these stories for generations to come and that the communities across New Zealand are acknowledged for their commitment and dedication during this time of remembrance.’ The idea for documenting residents stories first came about in 2014 when commemorating the start of WWI and although there are no veterans of WWI still alive today, there are descendants who have memories of their loved ones heading off to war and who have also lived through WWII to tell the tale.

Turkey-born Nejat Kavvas has a different perspective on Gallipoli than most Kiwis. For him, the campaign was about his country defending itself from an attack by foreign invaders. The former Turkish Honorary Consul in Auckland has no ancestral connection to Gallipoli but was key to the forging of New Zealand’s now strong friendship with Turkey.

Anzac Day has always been a big deal in Rachael Alp’s family. Her great grandfather served at Gallipoli and she is extremely proud of his effort. Her trip to Turkey will be about learning more about her past so she can pass it on and keep it alive in future generations.

Lyn Griffiths' grandfather was enlisted for war by his father. He left his wife and two young children in Auckland to serve at Gallipoli. He never returned. The stretcher-bearer was fatally shot while trying to rescue or recover comrades.
