Work has now begun on Riverdale Road, between George Street and Tipapakuku Road near Dannevirke, Tararua District Council says.
Repairs will be made to the large dropout or under slip caused by April's tropical cyclones.
Since the dropout the road has been reduced to one way past the slip, and restricted to light vehicles.
It has recently had to be closed due to the theft and vandalism of signs and temporary traffic lights used to ensure people's safety.
Drone surveying, geotechnical investigations, engineered design and building consenting processes have been completed and construction of the large retaining wall has begun, with the Tararua Alliance engaging local firm Morris & Bailey to complete the work.
