Major works to improve the Waikareao Estuary walkway are on track to finish within the week.

The popular loop, which includes the Daisy Hardwick walkway, has been partially closed since July while Tauranga City Council makes improvements.

Work includes resurfacing the path, reinstating the rock wall, repairing the concrete sections of the path and footings for the pedestrian bridges.

The work started on July 23 with an estimated completion time of four to five weeks.

A council spokesman said the work was expected to be completed by late this week or early next week.

"We've had a couple of days recently where it was too wet to work but things are otherwise going well," he said.

The work has meant the closure of the Takitimu Dr side of the Waikareao Estuary loop but the walkway on the city side of Takitimu Dr remained open.
