Apple tree nurseries around the country are experiencing "unprecedented demand" as a flow on consequence of the horticulture boom.
Waimea Nurseries managing director Mike Simpson said both small growers and large corporate businesses are demanding more apple trees.
"With the strong returns for several years in a row, growers are reinvesting and developing their orchard to new varieties, root stocks and growing systems," Mr Simpson said.
Mr Simpson reported "rolling orders" from many growers who realise the importance of planning ahead and securing the right root stock for their orchards.
"Due to the long production cycles for rootstocks and trees, forward planning with clients is critical for the nurseries to plan production," he said.
