Spud decision sparks boycott call

Australian protectionism has reared its head again when it comes to competing with New Zealand produce.

McDonald's plans to use New Zealand potatoes to make French fries in Australia, sparking calls from Australian farmers to boycott the fast food chain.

The move comes as New Zealand apple growers push for a World Trade Organisation case against Australia in the face of bio-trade barriers.

Federated Farmers president Tom Lambie says the key issue is that both countries work under CER and ultimately it is up to the Australian consumer to decide.

The loss of the fries contract is costing the Tasmanian economy around $50 million.
