A small Southland town has been completely cut off after this weekend's wild weather.

Heavy rain has caused all roads in and out of Waikaia to be flooded, leading to closures and warnings for motorists.

Remarkable images captured by Mike Thom of High Country Helicopters show the extent of the flooding.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said that State Highway 90 between Tapanui and Waikoikoi is closed, and flood warnings are in place for SH6 Queenstown-Kingston and SH8 Alexandra-Milton.

In an advisory on their website, Southland District Council said Riversdale Waikaia Road from Main Wendonside to Waikaia, Block Road, Piano Flat Road and Pyramid Waiparu Road werer all closed.

The Clutha District Council says the following roads are closed:

Beatties Rd - Station Rd to SH 90, Wooded Hill Rd - SH90 to Ardmore Rd, Koi Flat Rd - Pomahaka Rd to Conical Hill, Ardmore Rd - Park Hill to Wooded Hill Rd, Greenvale Rd - Cross Rd to Wooded Hill, Paradise Flat Rd - Ardmore Rd to Herbert's Stable, Winslade Rd - Station Rd to Greenvale Rd, MacFarlane - Clydevale Rd to Burkes Ford, Ross Rd - Clydevale Rd to Pomahaka Downs Rd, Pomahaka River Rd - Clydevale Rd to Lonsdale Rd.

The CDC says the Tuapeka Punt will be ceasing operations until further notice.

The Otago Regional Council says it is watching river levels around the region.

Wild weather has lashed the country over the last few days, causing large power outages and bringing down power lines and trees.
