Whanganui residents are disgusted with the destruction that was left around Castlecliff's Duncan Pavilion on Sunday morning.

Resident Robert Haworth said he was shocked to see the area covered with broken beer bottles and rubbish.

"The danger is the broken bottles and glass that is mixed into sand on the carpark and leading onto the beach."

His Facebook post sparked attention from other residents appalled at the irresponsible behaviour.

Bruce Tonkin said: "This happens far too often. People who do this have no respect for themselves for a start or the rest of us."

Jo Donghi said: "It's individuals like this who make it hard for everyone else in the future who wish to enjoy our beautiful beach with family."

Bill Costello said: "This sure is a disgrace. If the pavilion was hired, then they should be made to clean it all up, and even clear the sand off the road etc as part of the punishment!"

Whanganui's deputy mayor Jenny Duncan said as far as she knew mess like this didn't happen on a regular basis but it has horrified people.

"The council were notified straight away and after hours service, which was probably Downers, were there to clean up the mess.

"And then the glass in the sand had to be cleaned up by heavy machinery on Monday morning."

Mr Haworth said the council response had been exemplary and the damage had been restored.

"The family who hired the room were contacted and came and cleared the mess apparently but have lost their $400 bond."
