Grapes are now ripe for the picking, as the first day of autumn also marked day one of grape harvesting in Central Otago.
Vineyard staff were put to work on Friday on Quartz Reef's 30ha of fields in Bendigo.
Following a historic early season start in 2018, Quartz Reef winemaker Rudi Bauer said yesterday's first day was more "typical''.
"Sparkling wine is quite early. Our main harvest will be March 20, which is quite late compared to the rest of New Zealand.''
Vinewise viticulturist Grant Rolston said the regular rainfall in spring had led to more stability for winegrowers.
