Spring growing conditions called “fantastic” have set the district up for a potentially outstanding kiwifruit season, NZ Kiwifruit Growers local representative Tim Tietjen says.
The spring weather conditions had allowed for good pollination and fruit size gains, he said.
“The current crop is generally looking really good, thanks to that fantastic spring.
“Our season is currently tracking seven to 10 days ahead of [the] average, with growers optimistic for an early harvest, starting with the ruby red kiwifruit in early March.
“Many of the large orchard developments completed four to five years ago are now entering full production, which will see an increase in crop volume from the region,” Tietjen said.
