More than 1.35 million trees have been planted across the Horizons region following the Government's announcement in June of nearly $1million to plant trees on 1000ha of erosion-prone private land.
The money from the Provincial Growth Fund was added to by Horizons Regional Council and landowners for a funding pool of $1.9 million.
Horizons regional councillor David Cotton said the target of 1.35 million trees planted had already been exceeded but the exact number would not be known for a few months.
There's never been a better time to plant, he said.
The Government wanted trees to offset greenhouse gas emissions and young people making land-use decisions were more environmentally aware.
"The community and Government is also itching for those trees to go in," Cotton said.
