A man received serious injuries when he got trapped in a hay baler.

A 21-year-old Omakau man received serious leg injuries when he became trapped in a hay baler on a farm near Omakau yesterday.

Ambulance and fire services were called to the Devonshire Rd property about 1.30pm and the man was cut free by firefighters, Senior Constable Darren Cox, of Omakau, said.

A rescue helicopter arrived about 2.45pm and the man was flown to Dunedin Hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, Snr Const Cox said.

Worksafe NZ had been advised and would continue investigations into the incident, he said.
