Shearing champion Rowland Smith won his fifth Golden Shears Open Final at Masterton this weekend, but he wasn't resting on his laurels.

Smith spoke to The Country's Jamie Mackay today, saying he was driving a tractor and "back to the grindstone."

Smith has had a good season and says he has no regrets taking a two-year hiatus from the Golden Shears as "it was good to have a bit of a break out."

Smith has made the New Zealand shearing team and is focused on the New Zealand Shears which will come at the end of four weeks of show season.

Shearing competitions are strenuous and the show season keeps Smith busy, however he does give himself time off running a farming operation which provides "something different - the body needs a bit of a rest."
