The Country: Canterbury farmer and former All Black Richard Loe looks forward to Saturday’s Farmlands Cup clash (Highlanders v Crusaders) at Darfield and we ponder the future for wool.

Richard Loe caught up with The Country's Jamie Mackay today for an update on what's happening in his neck of the woods.

The weather is picking up in the Waimakariri Gorge where Loe's farm is situated. The wind has settled and things are looking good for the end of January.

However, Cheviot is not so lucky. It's still very dry and Loe has observed many sheep that are suffering from the drought-like conditions.

Mackay picks Loe's brains over his Dohne Merino breed and whether there's hope for a good meat/wool breed sheep to save the flagging wool industry.

Finally, Loe is looking forward to Saturday's Farmlands Cup clash between the Highlanders and his beloved Crusaders in Darfield. It's going to be a big event for the people of Darfield and the town is getting prepared for the 5pm kick-off.
