The controversy surrounding New Zealand's water quality is gaining momentum with some pointing their fingers at the dairy industry as a main pollutant.
Lincoln University academic Professor Keith Woodford caught up with The Country's Jamie Mackay to discuss whether there is a realistic alternative to dairy farming.
Professor Woodford says while there aren't too many substitutes for the dairy industry he is excited by some prospects in horticulture.
Mackay wants to know if New Zealand can maintain dairy numbers but use different practises such as wintering cows indoors.
Finally Jamie asks Professor Keith Woodford to comment on Dr Mike Joy's controversial ideas of ridding the Canterbury Plains of dairy cows all together and removing animals from the food chain.
