Tom Walsh won gold in shot put at the World Athletic Championships in London this week.
The Country's Jamie Mackay caught up with his father Peter for a chat about Tom's rural background, the state of New Zealand's agriculture in general and how proud he is of his world champion son.
Peter Walsh is no stranger to farming being one of the South Island's most successful stock agents. He started in livestock in 1965 and comments on the "rollercoaster" the agricultural economy has gone through in the last few years.
Walsh says farmers are "very durable people and they are the backbone of our economy ...let's take our hats off to the farmers," before retiring for a quiet celebratory beer with his son.
