Organisers say the farmers' protest in Jacinda Ardern's home town of Morrinsville was not supposed to be political but there was no denying the placards held up were against Labour's water tax policy.
On today's show The Country's Jamie Mackay asks Jacinda why should farmers bother to contemplate voting Labour.
"I absolutely believe that our farming community are environmentalists too, they want our rivers cleaned up as well."
Ardern says Labour wants to carry the majority of the burden for cleaning up waterways which would result in a clean green "brand" which would help New Zealand farmer-produced goods internationally.
