There's no question consumers will be getting more of their protein from non-animal sources, says KPMG's Global Head of Agribusiness Ian Proudfoot.
Talking to The Country's Jamie Mackay today at the Southern Primary Sector Update Conference in Invercargill where he is a keynote speaker, Proudfoot says we have to be open to the fact consumers will change their habits based on price and opportunity.
Jamie Mackay asks him about about the threat of alternative proteins. If New Zealand goes with animal-free proteins as a nation - will we be out of business?
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank predicts dairy prices will remain roughly where they are at the moment but Proudfoot doesn't agree stating the "Trump effect" will drive prices down.
New Zealand's water quality has been in the public eye lately especially when it comes to dairy practices. Proudfoot believes water will be a major election issue as "swimming in a river is an emotional part of being a Kiwi for a lot of people".
