Both beef and lamb exports are expected to be worth more than $3 billion each to the New Zealand economy.
Rabobank's Animal Proteins Analyst Blake Holgate spoke to The Country's Jamie Mackay about New Zealand's booming beef industry and how global weather patterns can affect its production.
Argentina's beef herd will shrink by up to 1 million head of cattle due to the worst drought in decades, which has forced ranchers to slaughter females rather than grow the herd. Holgate says examples like this can lead to changes for New Zealand beef production.
"We know the impact it's [climate] had on production here this year and given the global trade nature of beef, what happens in other regions can impact us just as much."
