Mycoplasma bovis has been in the news recently but a previous bio-security risk is still being dealt with by the Ministry for Primary Industries - Bonamia ostreae in oysters.
Bluff oysterman Willie Calder says although MPI have been making an effort he thinks the Ministry is out of its depth and should be split into divisions to deal with the specific issues affecting various industries.
"We should have a farmer looking after the farming industry and a fisherman looking after the fishing industry."
Calder spoke to The Country about how oyster farms are faring and how he believes MPI could have stopped the spread of the disease in the first place.
